Our Children Really Don’t Have a Clue About How Government Really Works

It is my opinion that our children today are learning little or nothing about the true nature of government today. Oh, sure, high school students learn the mechanics of what the school books describe as the ‘democratic’ process. And I’m afraid that eduction will be retained for about just long enough to complete their exams, and most of it will be forgotten almost immediately.

But to me the study of the mechanics of government is a smoke screen for the true nature of government today. I really don’t think it takes too much in the way of critical reasoning to understand that large international bankers and corporations control government today.

To support my point, here is a recent quote from Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill) on the last week of April 2009. On a local Chicago radio station he blurted out an obvious truth about Congress that, despite being blindingly obvious to many of us, is rarely spoken by government officials or the media.

He was quoted as saying:

“And the banks — hard to believe in a time when we’re facing a banking crisis that many of the banks created — are still the most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. And they frankly own the place.”

Senator Durbin’s blunt acknowledgment, that the same banks that caused the financial crisis “own” the Congress, demonstrates just how extreme the corruption in government is. Please note that Senator Durbin is one of the Senate’s more powerful members.

What are our children learning today?

I spent a few minutes with a very intelligent high school senior the other day. This student, was happy to have just completed their Advanced Placement (AP) Exam on government and politics. They will be attending a highly accredited university with an academic scholarship. We spent very little time in discussion, however it became very clear immediately that this student has put very little critical thought into the actual application of today’s government. I think it is fair to characterize it as blind loyalty to a failed process.

Not only could they not tell me the difference between democracy and republic, but the text books often say nothing about what our republic is all about, nor do they always define it.  And to top it off, the student didn’t know that the word democracy is not even mentioned in our Constitution.

Their future is at stake here, and I really do not understand just why the young adults of today are not more aware of what is truly happening to all of us. I guess it’s for the same reason that millions of Americans have fallen into the same trap. Complacency and apathy. For so long the fantasies and illusions have endured that we look at it as reality, and expect the so-called prosperity to continue forever. Well…..forever is about to come to an end!

What does it matter that the process of government has a detailed structure with checks and balances if none of them ultimately work to preserve our individual rights and freedoms?
